STDs for them include the most common "contraceptive glasses" (BCG) and other variations. At one time, they were officially designated as Regulation Glasses (RPG). They are commonly said to mean "rubbing glasses" because of their unstylish appearance. Similar glasses (without metal) may be issued to inmates in state and federal prisons.
The original version was intended for use with gas masks during World War II. It was fenced with wire with cable ties and shaped "P3" ls. The design is a modification of the style used by the British Army.
After World War II, the material was changed from nickel alloy wire to cellulose acetate. Initially, gray cellulose acetate was used, but this was discontinued in 1968, with remaining stocks being issued while supplies last. The stock frame uses black cellulose acetate.

GI glasses are officially issued to recruits from recruit training or officer candidate schools in the US Army. During recruit training, service members may wear civilian eyewear until specified by the government, including but not limited to BCG. No contact is allowed during these exercises. After recruiting training, service personnel are allowed to use Frame of Choice glasses that are conservative in design and color, or contact lenses. The Army offers an annual exchange for those who qualify, and personnel can request government-issued glasses, as well as several varieties of attractive eyeglass lenses, in clear and tinted colors, as well as prescription gas mask inserts and government-sponsored inserts for glasses.
