May 14, 2012 Last Updated 05/14/12 (DR) We stopped by STS Arms in Oregon yesterday on our way to the 2012 NDIA Joint Arms Conference, Show and Fire Demonstration in Seattle to drop off some guns (AR and other weapons) on (Cerakote ceramic), which is one of the company's specialties. . STS coats the interior with Micro Slick, a permanent dry lube ceramic coating that greatly reduces or even eliminates the need for wet lubrication. STS owner Ron Downs then took us to the range where we did a little shooting with a few of his guns, including a built in (STS Arms) tactical AR SBR (short barreled rifle) 300 AAC full auto .22 LR AR and a resistance piece, selective/full auto Glock 22 (G22) equipped with a push type STS Arms prototype with a selective fire switch/backplate reminiscent of the FSSG fire select system that DR wrote about a long time ago. In fact, the STS Arms backplate switch appears to function the same as the FSSG, with only minor differences in physical appearance and materials. The STS Arms firing backplate for Glock pistols appears to be all steel, while the FSSG, originally invented by Mr. Jorge A. Leon of Venezuela and holder of US patent number US5705763 made of high strength graphite polymer. How the STS rear panel bypasses the FSSG patent, or if it bypasses it, is anybody's guess. But it sure is fun. It's actually great, pardon the pun. So how does it work? For normal semi-automatic ignition, make sure the selector knob is pushed all the way to the left so that it protrudes from the left side and is flush with the right side. To switch to rock'n'roll/full auto mode, simply press the button from left to right until the button clicks all the way to the right. As with the FSSG, the STS Arms Glock Backplate Switch replaces the standard Glock backplate and can be swapped from one Glock to another just as easily. The first video below (above video) is my second attempt at fully auto shooting a G22 pistol fitted with an STS Arms backplate after getting used to its shooting characteristics.
